Gibraltar releases detained Iranian tanker

Iranian supertanker Grace 1, detained since July by the United Kingdom in Gibraltar over suspicions it was carrying crude to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions, was released, the Gibraltar Chronicle reported on Thursday. The Government of Gibraltar said that the vessel was impounded because there was "documentary evidence the vessel was bound for Syria," but that it has now received "formal written assurances" from Tehran that the ship will not offload its cargo in Syria.

The decision was reached despite a last-minute application made by the United States Department of Justice, which urged the postponement of the release.

Gibraltar's Supreme Court prolonged the detention of the tanker on July 19 for one more month. Immediately afterward, Iran impounded Stena Impero, a tanker with a British flag that was carrying oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
