Global COVID-19 deaths hit daily record of 10,969

The number of registered coronavirus deaths climbed by 10,969 on November 18, data compiled from health authorities worldwide showed. The figure marks the largest daily rise in fatalities from the disease since the pandemic started.

The total death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 1,354,813. The United States remains the most affected country with over 250,000 fatalities, followed by Brazil with around 167,000 deaths from the virus.

Earlier, a Danish study showed face masks reduce the risk of infection only by 20%. However, hopes of the coronavirus pandemic slowing have risen recently as several vaccine makers, including Pfizer and Moderna, said their candidates are over 90% efficient against the disease.
