Gojek CEO resigns, joins Indonesian government

The founder and CEO of Gojek Nadiem Makarim resigned from his position with the company to join Indonesian President Joko Widodo's cabinet. He will be succeeded by Gojek Group President Andre Soelistyo and the startup's co-founder Kevin Aluwi as co-CEOs.

"I have the extraordinary honor to be able to join his cabinet. My mission at Go-Jek was always to show Indonesia on the world stage. So this is a continuation of that mission, but now for the country on a larger scale," Makarim said on Monday after the meeting with the president.

In April, Joko Widodo won his second five-year term that started on Sunday after he was sworn into office. Even though Makarim's new position is not revealed yet, according to the local media report he may join the recently established Ministry of Digital Economy or Ministry of Education and Culture.
