Google to let European users choose default search engine

Tech giant Google will allow European users of its Android operating system to choose their default search engine from early next year, it announced in a blog post on Friday.

The company said that the choice screen will appear during the initial device setup and will feature multiple search providers, including Google. The search engines will vary by country and their providers will have the chance to bid in each country to have their engine displayed on the choice screen, with the three highest bidders winning the right to do so. The feature is expected to be rolled out from 2020.

The move comes after the European Commission fined Google $5 billion over its concerns with the company's Android operating system in July last year. Media also reported on Thursday that Google was being scrutinized by German regulators over allegations that its contractors eavesdropped on conversations recorded by its AI-powered Google Assistant.
