GOP senators introduce bill allowing China sanctions

Several Republican senators from the United States introduced a bill on Tuesday that would allow the US President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on China if it fails to provide information on the origins of coronavirus.

The COVID-19 Accountability Act, introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham and backed by eight other members of the Republican party, would allow Trump to implement sanctions on Chinese citizens, including the freeze of assets, as well as travel bans and visa revocations in case that China "does not cooperate with investigations led by the US, its allies or United Nations affiliates."

Under the bill, the US president would be required to make a certification to Congress within 60 days that China provided a complete accounting to any investigation, closed all "wet markets" and released advocates in Hong Kong, who were arrested during the pandemic.
