Greek defense minister quits post

Greece's Minister of National Defense Panos Kammenos (pictured) resigned after the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia voted to change its name, various media reported on Sunday.

Kammenos stated that "the Macedonia name issue... doesn't allow me not to sacrifice the minister's chair" after meeting Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday morning. He also said that he would withdraw six other ministers from his party from the government. Kammenos's right-wing Independent Greeks party is part of the Greek ruling coalition but the impact of his resignation on the government was not immediately clear.

Macedonia's parliament voted to change the country's name to the Republic of North Macedonia on Friday. The change is part of the country's effort to end a longstanding dispute with Greece over its name, which the latter says should be changed before Macedonia can be admitted to institutions such as the European Union or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
