Hamilton takes Australian Grand Prix pole position

Mercedes' world champion Lewis Hamilton took pole position for a record-breaking eighth time ahead of the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, media reported on Saturday.

Hamilton clocked a fastest lap of 1:20.486 to narrowly edge out teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was a mere 0.112 seconds slower. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was third with 1:21.190, Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fourth and Ferrari newcomer Charles Leclerc rounded off the top five. The win was Hamilton's sixth consecutive pole position and eighth overall.

The pole position race determines who will start the main event race in first place and is usually done the day before the main event. The Australian Grand Prix is scheduled to kick off at 6:10 am CET on Sunday.
