Hammond: More optimistic today about Brexit talks

Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said on Friday he feels more "optimistic" today about the progress of Brexit negotiations than he did a couple of weeks ago. Speaking to CNBC on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund meetings in Bali, Indonesia, Hammond explained that the European Union is finally showing the will to move forward. "The other side is clearly trying to move this forward and has the same sense of urgency and need for progress as we do," he stated.

The government's main objective is to ensure it respects the mandate of the British people and secure a "clear and positive economic future" for the country in its deal on leaving the EU, he explained. "The issue is to deliver a deal that meets our requirements, what the British people want to see and we've been very clear about the mandate we've been given," Hammond concluded.
