Hancock: UK long way from lifting restrictions

British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Sunday that the government is not "exactly certain how deadly" the recently discovered and more transmissible coronavirus strain is. Commenting about lockdown on Sky News, Hancock revealed early data suggests the lockdown measures are producing desired effects. However, he noted the country is a "long, long way" from lifting the restrictions.

Hancock refused to rule out the possibility that the government will introduce border controls in order to stop South African and Brazilian coronavirus strains from entering the country. At the same time, he did not negate reports suggesting people who are ordered to stay home could be given £500 as a relief.

The UK has reported nearly 40,000 positive cases in recent days, with the average number of deaths above 1,000. Next to Spain, the country is considered the epicenter of the pandemic in Europe despite tight lockdown measures.
