Health spending should be priority amid COVID-19 - WHO, IMF

The heads of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Monetary Fun (IMF) called on countries to focus on health spending in order to contain the coronavirus outbreak as soon as possible.

"At face value there is a trade-off to make: either save lives or save livelihoods. This is a false dilemma – getting the virus under control is, if anything, a prerequisite to saving livelihoods," WHO's Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (pictured) and IMF's Kristalina Georgieva wrote in a column in the Telegraph.

"As financing to support severely constrained public budgets reaches the countries in need, our joint plea is to place health expenditures at the top of the priority list," they added, noting that protecting public health and reopening businesses go "hand-in-hand."
