HK foreign correspondents complain about visa delays

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Hong Kong (FCCHK) reported on Thursday that many journalists are experiencing delays in the visa application process amid tensions between the United States and China. FCCHK noted this is highly unusual as Hong Kong is known for the legal protection of the press.

Previously, the journalists working in Hong Kong needed only a business visa, unlike in mainland China where reporters must apply for specific visas. However, now many news agencies have reported difficulties in the visa renewal process. The FCCHK issued a statement condemning the new restrictions: "The FCC opposes using journalists' visas as a weapon in international disputes and also opposes taking action against journalists for the decisions made by their home countries."

Since the start of the year, both China and the US placed a number of visa restrictions on journalists from the other country.
