Hong Kong police arrest over 180 amid protests

Hong Kong police said on Wednesday that more than 180 people were arrested over offenses committed during protests in the city, including seven who were suspected of violating China's new national security law.

"Over 180 have been arrested for participating in unauthorized assemblies, disorderly conduct, possession of offensive weapons and other related offenses," the police said in a tweet. "Arrest action is underway. Stop breaking the law," they added.

The arrests come a day after the controversial national security law was approved by the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) and signed by President Xi Jinping. Earlier in the day, Hong Kong police announced they arrested a man who violated the law by holding a Hong Kong independence flag.
