Hong Kong society needs to condemn violence - police chief

Hong Kong's new police chief Tang Ping-keung told the South China Morning Post that only society's condemnation of violence can put an end to the six-month-long protests in China's special administrative region.

Tang, who is set to be sworn in later in the day, slammed people for only criticizing the police but failing to condemn the violence by the protesters.

"Whatever your beliefs, do not glorify and put up with the violence. Do not let the mob further motivate themselves and become more radicalized," Tang stated. "We can only end the unrest with society's condemnation, reflection by the rioters, plus our appropriate tactics," he added.
