Hope to make substantial progress on trade deal - Mnuchin

Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin "hopes to make substantial progress" in the trade negotiations with China's officials in the upcoming meetings, reiterating earlier statements that "a lot of progress has been made."

"We have a meeting here, and then the vice premier and team will be coming back to Washington DC, and we hope to make substantial progress in these two meetings," the US official told the reporters in Beijing.

Mnuchin, who is a part of the negotiating team led Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, is set to meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He later today in an attempt to solve the issues and end the months-long trade dispute between the world's two largest economies. A day earlier, the treasury secretary stated alleged China's espionage practices were separate from trade issues.
