House passes $858 billion 2023 US defense bill

The United States House of Representatives approved on Thursday the $858 billion National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2023.

The vote tally was 350-80, with 45 Democrats and 35 Republicans opposing the bill, which notably revokes the coronavirus vaccine mandate for American soldiers at the request of GOP lawmakers, who will take over the House majority in 2023. The Department of Defense will receive $816.7 billion and the Department of Energy will get $30.3 billion in funding. A sum of $32.6 billion will go toward Navy shipbuilding and $11.5 billion will be invested into the Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI), according to the bill's summary.

The proposal has to receive the green light in the Senate and by President Joe Biden next to become law.
