House passes spending bill to avoid govt shutdown

The United States House of Representatives passed a stopgap funding bill in an effort to avoid a government shutdown on December 3.

The bill was approved with a 221-212 margin, in an almost party-line vote. It aims to keep the federal agencies funded through February 18, giving lawmakers more time to reach an agreement on next year's appropriations bills.

The legislation is headed to the Senate floor next where it could face problems as a number of Republican policymakers have threatened to block the bill's quick passage.
