IEA chief: Tanker attacks threat to global energy security

International Energy Agency (IEA) Director Fatih Birol (pictured) stated on Friday that yesterday's attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman poses a "major concern" to the global energy security and the oil markets, media reported. According to the official, the agency is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to interfere if and when it deems it necessary.

Earlier, the United States released a video allegedly taken after the attack on two oil tankers, which supposedly shows a boat belonging to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the tankers. However, Iran categorically rejected the US accusation it was responsible for the attacks on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and called on the international community to prevent "the reckless and dangerous policies and practices of the US and its regional allies in heightening the tensions in the region."
