Ikea temporarily shuts multiple China stores amid coronavirus

Swedish furniture retailer Ikea said on Wednesday it is temporarily closing around 15 stores in China in response to the outbreak of the coronavirus in the Asian country.

"In response to the Chinese government’s call for efficient control of the spread of the disease IKEA China will from Jan. 29 temporarily close around half of the stores in China," the company stated. "Affected employees will stay at home until further notice with pay," Ikea added.

Earlier, Starbucks confirmed it closed over half of its stores in China and warned the coronavirus is expected to affect its second-quarter results, while Apple noted it closed one retail location and reduced working hours in other stores. Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn told its Taiwan staff don't need to return to work at China factories until mid-February. According to the latest information, 132 people have died after contracting the disease, while over 6,000 have been infected.
