India announces $22.6B COVID-19 stimulus plan

The Indian government announced on Thursday a 1.7 trillion rupee ($22.6 billion) stimulus plan to help the poor amid the coronavirus crisis.

"We have come with a package which will immediately take care of the welfare concerns of the poor and suffering workers, and those who need immediate help," Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated and noted the economic stimulus will include direct cash transfers, as well as food security measures.

On Wednesday, India declared a 21-day lockdown in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. According to the latest data, there are 681 registered coronavirus cases and 13 confirmed fatalities in the country.
