Instagram sets age limit to 13

As of today, photo and video-sharing social network Instagram will start asking for a birth date when creating a new account. The Facebook-owned company stated the intention is to prevent children under 13 from using the app. Also, it will enable the app to stream "more age-appropriate experiences."

Despite this new measure, the company said it won’t be age-checking its existing users, meaning it will turn a blind eye to any underage user among its one billion members. However, last year, Instagram allegedly told moderators to lock accounts of people they suspect are below 13.

The New York-based also said to tighten controls for direct messaging disabling spammers adding users to various groups in order to get more customers.
