Iran registers record high 157 new COVID-19 deaths

The death toll from coronavirus jumped by 157 or over 7% in the past 24 hours to reach 2,234 in Iran, the country's health official said on Thursday. Iran marked the sharpest daily increase in new COVID-19 fatalities since the beginning of the outbreak.

The number of coronavirus infections surged by 2,389 overnight to 29,406 nationwide, recording the biggest jump in new confirmed cases in one day. Compared to yesterday's update, the number grew by nearly 9%.

On Wednesday, Iran restricted domestic travel between cities in an attempt to curb the infection as President Hassan Rouhani claimed that the country could face a new wave of the spreading of coronavirus.
