Iran's Zarif travels to New York for meeting in UN

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday that Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif would attend the annual meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and that he left for New York. The United States threatened last month to blacklist him over the Middle Eastern country's decision to reduce compliance with the disputed international nuclear deal.

Zarif apparently got a visa and went to participate in discussions about the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The ministry's spokesman Abbas Mousavi revealed his boss would later travel to Venezuela to meet counterparts from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and hold bilateral discussions with the host.

The top diplomat is scheduled to go to Nicaragua and Bolivia after that. The administration in Washington is reportedly postponing sanctions against him and the State Department yesterday cited its obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement.
