Iran unblocks Telegram messaging service

Iranian authorities have once again enabled full access to the Telegram messenger app that was banned during the anti-government protests, local news reported on Sunday. The restrictions on the Telegram and Instagram apps were imposed on December 31 by Iran's Supreme National Security Council, a few days day after violent protests erupted all across the country due to poor economic conditions. Earlier, Tehran's Minister of Information and Communications Technology Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi threatened to completely block Telegram unless "terrorist channels" were closed.

The decision to unblock the messaging service comes shortly after Iran's Revolutionary Guard declared victory against the anti-government protesters. The Guard also accused a number of foreign countries including the US, UK, Israel and Saudi Arabia of orchestrating the unrest, which claimed the lives of few dozen people and resulted in the arrest of a few hundred more.
