Iran willing to negotiate with US if sanctions lifted - Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday his country would be willing to hold negotiations on its nuclear program with the United States if Washington removed its sanctions against Tehran.

"f they are prepared to put aside the sanctions, we are ready to talk and negotiate, even at the level of heads of the 5+1 countries," Rouhani stated, referring to signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. The JCPOA was signed in 2015 by China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the US and Germany, but the US left the agreement in 2018.

On Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted the country does not want to leave the JCPOA despite the fact it has been suspending its commitments under the nuclear deal from 2015 in response to Washington's withdrawal from the agreement and European signatories alleged failure to fulfil their obligations. Aragchi also stressed that Iran is ready to go back to full compliance with the JCPOA if the US lifts sanctions.
