Iraqi PM tells Pompeo M. East needs 'calm'

Iraq asked the United States on Friday to achieve "calm" in the Middle East in order to avoid a further escalation of tensions in the region.

In a phone call with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi discussed the Gulf of Oman oil tanker incident and the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, a statement from the Iraqi prime ministers office said, and added that the two also talked about "efforts to maintain security and stability" in the Middle East.

The US accused Iran of carrying out attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Iran denied the claims.
