Ireland preparing for UK-EU trade war - Varadkar

Ireland has begun making contingency plans to prepare for the possibility of a trade war between the European Union and the United Kingdom, Ireland’s deputy prime minister Leo Varadkar told RTE News on Tuesday.

According to Varadkar, suspension of the trade deal between the EU and the UK is the likely response from Brussels in case Boris Johnson abandons the Northern Ireland protocol. The Irish Fine Gael politician believes that this outcome would likely collapse both the entire Brexit deal and relations between the two powers.

"I don’t think anybody wants to see the European Union suspending the trade and cooperation agreement with Britain, but if Britain were to act in such a way ... the European Union would have no option other than to introduce what we call rebalancing measures to respond," Varadkar said.
