Irish PM speaks out against EU vaccine export ban

Ireland's Taoiseach Micheal Martin said on Monday that an export ban on coronavirus vaccines from the European Union would be a "very retrograde step."

Speaking on RTE's News at One, Martin said that export bans would be damaging to the vaccine supply chain, adding that vaccine makers Moderna and Johnson & Johnson told him that they would increase output if supply chains are not disrupted.

Back in January, the European Commission announced a new export regime for COVID-19 vaccines. AstraZeneca's failure to deliver more shots to the EU has led to increased tensions in the bloc in recent weeks. So far, Italy has blocked a shipment of 250,000 Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccines to Australia.
