Israel to block US Reps. Omar, Tlaib from visiting - report

The government of Israel decided not to allow United States Democrat congresswomen Ilhan Omar (pictured right) and Rashida Tlaib (pictured left) to enter the country for their planned visit later this week, local Channel 12 reported.

The decision was based on the law from 2017 that bans foreign activists who support the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) effort against Israel from entering the country, according to the report. Both Omar and Tlaib have openly declared their support for BDS to protest Israel's policies toward Palestinians. According to their itinerary seen by Israel Hayom newspaper, their plan was to visit Palestinian communities in Jerusalem, Hebron, Bethlehem and Ramallah and arrive on Friday, two days earlier than they publicly announced.

Omar and Tlaib were the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress in the last midterms. Together with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley, they have been branded as part of the progressive newcomer "Squad," and attacked for their controversial views on Israel and other issues by President Donald Trump himself. Tlaib is Palestinian-American, born in Michigan, while Omar immigrated from Somalia in 1992.
