Italian PM Conte to resign amid coalition tensions

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Tuesday he would resign from his post amid tensions in the ruling coalition which escalated into a motion for a no-confidence vote in his government, triggered by Matteo Salvini, his Interior Minister and coalition partner.

Addressing the upper house of the Italian parliament, Conte stated that the motion submitted by Salvini deserves a "public debate" and that he cannot allow such a serious matter to be discussed in "secret meetings" or on social media. "The timing of this decision exposes our country to serious risk," he noted, lambasting Salvini and dubbing his actions irresponsible. The prime minister then announced he would be heading to the presidential palace after the debate to inform President Sergio Mattarella about his intention.

Conte assumed the role of prime minister on June 1, 2018 after weeks of political deadlock, at the proposal of Luigi Di Maio, the leader of the Five Star Movement and current Deputy Prime Minister, and Salvini.
