Italy not to take part in Syria military intervention - Gentiloni

Italy's Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni (pictured) said on Thursday that the country does not intend to participate in a potential military campaign against Syria, Agenzia Nova reported.

According to sources from Gentiloni's office, the prime minister took part in a number of phone conversations on the issue of launching a military intervention in the Middle Eastern country in response to the alleged chemical attack in Douma, but noted Italy will not be joining the action against the Syrian government. However, Gentiloni did note the country is ready to provide logistics support to its allies.

The United States threatened Syria with a missile attack after accusing the Bashar al-Assad government of using chemical weapons. The United Kingdom and France expressed willingness to join the campaign, while Germany noted it will not be taking part in the potential intervention. However, US President Donald Trump stressed the timing of the intervention has not been decided on and may be either "very soon" or "not soon at all."
