Italy registers record 31,084 COVID-19 cases

Italy registered a record 31,084 new COVID-19 cases and 199 coronavirus-related deaths over the past day, the official data published by the country's Health Ministry showed on Friday.

The numbers have been on the rise since the start of October, with the total tally standing at 647,674 positive cases and 38,321 fatalities. The region of Lombardy is the most impacted Italian area with close to 187,000 recorded cases. Over the past day, the region's authorities confirmed 8,960 new cases.

Tightened restriction measures have gone into effect since this week across Italy, with restaurants and bars operating under shorter working hours, and cinemas, theatres, gaming halls, discotheques and gyms being closed.
