J&J to test 60,000 subjects in phase three vaccine trial

Johnson & Johnson will commence the world's largest clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine candidate, which would include 60,000 participants, a press representative for the company confirmed in an interview for the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The phase three testing will start in late September, the spokesperson revealed, adding that J&J wants to include "a robust number" of trial subjects "who are representative of those populations affected by COVID-19." The first results may be published by the end of 2020, while the company reportedly plans to make the first doses available for potential emergency use in early 2021.

Earlier this month, it was announced that J&J sealed agreements with the European Union and the United States on purchasing its vaccine, while Mexico said it plans to test the shot in September.
