Japan asks Pfizer for more vaccine doses

Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga asked Pfizer Inc. to supply additional doses of its coronavirus vaccine to his country during his visit to the United States on Sunday. Media reported that the Japanese minister in charge of vaccination Taro Kono confirmed in an interview Suga had a phone call with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.

The prime minister asked for enough doses to inoculate "all eligible recipients" by September and urged the company to ensure a stable supply of the shot. Kono did not provide details on the call, but he stated that Suga and Bourla agreed "on the essentials." The Pfizer vaccine is the only one currently approved in Japan, whose government expects to receive 100 million doses by June.
