Japan expands state of emergency in country

Japanese Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura (pictured) announced that the government was declaring a state of emergency in three more prefectures.

The move was a revamp of the government's original proposing of instituting a quasi-state of emergency in five prefectures, which would allow the country to implement similar coronavirus measures as in those where a full state of emergency was instituted. However, according to Nishimura, after consulting with experts they "retracted our original proposal and came up with this new one and got approval for it."

Japan has already extended the state of emergency to the end of May, and the new ones might reportedly last until June 13. The added prefectures were Hokkaido, Okayama and Hiroshima.
