Japan govt seeks COVID emergency extension

The Japanese government plans to propose an extension to the state of emergency due to the coronavirus to last until August 31, Japanese media outlets reported on Thursday.

Following on from earlier reports, the government will extend the state of emergency in Tokyo and Okinawa, as they continue to break records in daily case numbers. Furthermore, four more prefectures, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, and Osaka, will be placed under a state of emergency to help curb the spread of the virus. The parliament will vote tomorrow to officially declare the extension.

The extension comes at a time when Japan is experiencing a record-breaking surge in COVID-19 cases. Authorities reported that, over the past 24 hours, 10,699 people were infected with the virus, marking the first time that daily cases were above 10,000 since the pandemic began.
