Japan planning to pick new PM on October 4 - report

The Japanese parliament is looking to gather on October 4 to pick a new prime minister following the announced resignation of Yoshihide Suga, Kyodo reported on Tuesday.

Last week, Suga, who replaced Shinzo Abe as prime minister last year, said he will step down once his current term ends on September 30.

According to a Yomiuri Shimbun poll, Administrative and Regulatory Reform Minister Taro Kono, who is also in charge of the COVID-19 response, is the favorite to succeed Suga. Other potential candidates for the position include former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba, former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and ex-Internal Affairs Minister Sanae Takaichi.
