Japan PM Shinzo Abe to resign over health reasons - reports

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is planning to step down from his position as the head of the state over health reasons, multiple Japanese media reported on Friday.

Abe wants to avoid destabilization of the government due to his illness, according to the reports published by NHK, Kyodo News and the Asahi Shimbun, therefore is about to resign from his post. After having medical checks earlier in the week, Abe dismissed public concerns regarding his health saying he was doing a regular check-up.

This story comes against previous claims made by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who asserted Abe will complete his term as the country's leader. Abe recently surpassed the record for the longest consecutive run as the country prime minister.
