Japan PM’s India visit delayed due to protests

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s scheduled visit to India next week has been postponed, the Japanese foreign ministry confirmed on Friday. The three-day summit was planned in the Indian city of Guwahati between Abe and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Guwahati, in the northern-eastern Indian region of Assam, has been hit by large protests over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The controversial new law grants citizenship to illegal immigrants from some countries neighbouring India, while barring Muslims arriving from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. On Thursday, two people were killed and several injured when police opened fire to control a violent mob in Guwahati.

Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted on Friday that both sides have decided to defer the Japanese prime minister’s visit to "a mutually convenient date in the near future."
