Japan posts ¥187.1 billion trade deficit in May

Japan's total merchandise trade deficit went under analysts' projections in May, landing at ¥187.1 billion, according to a provisional report released by the country's Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.

The figure marked an improvement compared to the ¥585.7 billion deficit recorded in May 2020, despite falling on a monthly basis in contrast with the surplus of ¥253.1 billion seen in April this year.

The country's exports for the time period surprised expectations, rising 49.6% year-on-year to land at ¥6.26 trillion, with imports standing below the estimated number, adding 27.9% compared to the same month last year, to reach ¥6.45 trillion.
