Japan retail sales rise by 2.7% in September

Japan's retail sales surprised expectations in September rising by 2.7% on an annual basis to land at ¥12.04 billion, according to a preliminary report released on Thursday by the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

On a monthly basis, the sales value went 0.6% down. The total value of commercial sales amounted to ¥46.42 billion, with 6.1% more goods sold compared to September 2020.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted value of sales in the wholesale industry reached ¥34.39 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 8.7%.
