Japan's economy grows 2.2% in Q2

Japan's gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 2.2% in the second quarter compared to the same quarter in 2021, the Cabinet Office stated in its preliminary report on Monday. The figure came in lower than the projected 2.6% but exceeded the growth seen in the last quarter before the COVID-19 pandemic. On a monthly basis, the Japanese economy grew by 0.5%, lower than the expected 0.7%.

Domestic demand rose by 2% year-on-year and was unchanged monthly. Private demand was up 1.8% compared to Q2 2021 and 0.5% month-on-month, while public demand added 2.5% and 0.6% respectively. Private consumption was up by 4.6% annually and 1.1% monthly.
