Japan's consumer deflation at 0.4% in April

Consumer prices in Japan surprised expectations in April, with the headline decreasing by 0.4% on a yearly basis to stand at 101.4, unchanged compared to the previous month's data, according to a report released by the Statistics Bureau of Japan on Friday.

The Consumer Price Index excluding fresh food and energy went up by 0.2% year-on-year and 0.7% month-on-month, while the CPI excluding only fresh food lost 0.1% on a yearly and 0.5% on a monthly basis.

The index for goods was decreased 0.3% compared to April last year, while services prices went down by 0.6% year-on-year. Furniture and household utensils prices saw the biggest increase, rising 2.5% compared to April 2020, while fuel, light and water-related charges fell the most on an annual basis, going down by 2.8 percentage points.
