Johnson asks EU to delay Brexit by 3 months

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a letter to the European Union on Saturday evening asking for another Brexit delay of three months, European Council President Donald Tusk confirmed on Twitter.

"The extension request has just arrived. I will now start consulting EU leaders on how to react. #Brexit," Tusk wrote.

After the Letwin amendment passed earlier in the day, the government in London decided to postpone the vote on the Brexit deal for next week. This left the prime minister obliged to request another Brexit delay from Brussels in accordance with the Benn Act, which stipulates the extension must be sought if a withdrawal deal has not passed in the House of Commons by October 19.
