Johnson: British ship sailed through int'l waters

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson defended on Thursday HMS Defender's actions in the Black Sea by saying it is "wholly appropriate to use international waters" around Crimea.

"The important point is that we don't recognize the Russian annexation of Crimea, this is part of a sovereign Ukrainian territory – it was entirely right that we should vindicate the law and pursue freedom of navigation in the way that we did, take the shortest route between two points, and that's what we did," Johnson said.

Earlier this week, Moscow stated its navy fired warning shots at the Royal Navy's HMS Defender after it crossed Russia's border in the Black Sea, which the United Kingdom then denied. Later on, Russia threatened it will "bomb not only the path [of a ship], but hit the target" if other countries do not "respect common sense and international law."
