Johnson declares 1-month lockdown in England

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Saturday the introduction of a lockdown in entire England that would last a month, starting from November 5 and ending on December 2, amid predictions the situation during the winter period could be "twice as bad or more" than in the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The prime minister confirmed that people would be allowed to leave their homes "only for specific reasons, such as education, work, or food shopping." He added schools, universities, and other educational institutions, as well as workplaces for those who cannot work from home, would remain open.

"We will get through this, but we must act now to contain this autumn surge," he concluded, "Stay at home, protect the NHS [National Health Service], and save lives." Earlier in the day, the number of registered cases of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom surpassed one million.
