Johnson: England to move to virus restrictions Plan B

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that England will move to the so-called Plan B in terms of the restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19, particularly its new variant Omicron.

Johnson said the government decided to proceed with the move as the new data showed the new strain is "growing much faster" than the Delta one and so far provided no evidence that Omicron is "less severe." He remarked the situation in the United Kingdom could soon be as in South Africa, where hospitalizations from the new variant are "increasing rapidly." So far, Britain has registered 568 cases of Omicron, which could double in "two to three days."

The news measures include reintroducing work from home for all positions businesses can support, wearing face masks in most indoor places, and making National Health Service's (NHS), which shows if one has received a vaccine, tested negative, or recovered from coronavirus, mandatory for entering clubs and other public venues. Most restrictions will come in force on Friday, while businesses will have a week to adapt to the new model.
