Johnson, Juncker agree to intensify Brexit talks- Downing St

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker had a "constructive" conversation during which they agreed to "intensify" Brexit talks in an effort to ensure Britain leaves the European Union with a deal, Downing Street said in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, Johnson insisted once again that he will take the UK out of the bloc at the end of October with or without a deal but pointed out he would prefer an orderly Brexit. "The prime minister reconfirmed his commitment to the Good Friday/Belfast agreement and his determination to reach a deal with the backstop removed, that UK parliamentarians could support," Downing Street stated.

Earlier, Juncker noted the Commission is willing to consider any proposals to replace the backstop as long as they are "legally operational" but stressed London is yet to offer such a solution. Johnson claimed over the weekend that he can secure a Brexit agreement "within weeks." Last week, the UK Parliament passed a bill which obliges the prime minister to request an extension of Article 50 unless the government strikes an agreement with the EU in time to ensure an orderly Brexit on October 31.
