Johnson, Merkel discuss NI Protocol

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol, as he urged Merkel to talk with her European Union counterparts to consider the need for a renegotiation of the plan.

In a readout of their call published by Number 10 on Thursday, Johnson asserted that the Protocol "failed to deliver on many of its intended objectives," including minimizing the disruption of lives and preserving the Good Friday Agreement. Additionally, he stated that the solutions to the Protocol "could not be found through the existing mechanisms," giving this as the reason for the "significant changes" proposed by the British government.

Earlier, it was reported that the European Union would not renegotiate the Protocol, despite the statements from British officials that the Protocol "wasn't written in stone" and frowned upon the bloc's purist approach to it.
