Johnson 'more optimistic' than Barnier on trade deal

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday he is "more optimistic" than European Union's chief negotiator Michel Barnier that the two sides will be able to reach a post-Brexit trade agreement before the end of the transition period.

Speaking to the LBC radio, Johnson denied Barnier's allegations that the UK was being disrespectful and insisted Britain only wants to get a good deal for itself and that he doesn't think it would be right for the UK to have to obey EU laws after leaving the bloc. The prime minister added that even if a deal is not reached, the UK will still have a "good option" of an Australian-style deal with the EU.

On Thursday, Barnier warned that "serious divergences remain" between the UK and the EU following the latest round of talks.
