Johnson urges caution about Indian COVID strain

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday the public must remain "very careful" about the Indian strain of COVID-19 as the Public Health England (PBE) reclassified it as a "variant of concern."

The PBE warned that strain is "at least as transmissible" as the one found in Kent. Still, the agency stressed there was not sufficient evidence to prove if it causes more severe disease than other variants or if the vaccines approved so far are not effective against it.

The PBE thus reaffirmed a recent statement made by Environment Secretary George Eustice, who said there are not proofs the Indian strain is more contagious, "but it is something that we are watching."
